For some, essential oils are part of the crunchy mom or hippie movement. Others, like my mother and myself, swear by the power of alternative or natural medicine. My mom was relentlessly teased for using essentials oils 15 years ago. She’s even been called a witch doctor (all in jest). There are some funny things in her book such as putting some different oils on your big toe if you have problems with your father. But who know? There may be something to that!
Growing up using these oils made it weird for me not having them around when I started my own family. Some of them, like Frankincense, are insanely expensive but you wouldn’t use an oil like that very often. However, there are so many others that are so affordable and because they are so concentrated, they last for a really long time.
The usefulness of each one is so great too because some are for your health and others can be used for cleaning. Even better, some can be used for both!
Another great thing about starting an essential oil collection now is there a variety of places you can purchase these oils for great prices.

So, without further ado, I give you my list of 6 Affordable Essential Oils You Need at Home:
#1 Lavender Oil
Everybody know the beautiful flower and scent that is Lavender. It has a wonderful fresh and clean smell which is why people love using in candles, cleaning products and body products like soap. I make a simple foaming soap for my son with castile soap, water and a few drops of lavender. He always smells AMAZING!
This oil is also one of my BFFs in the summer because….it is an amazing bug repellent! So you will not only smell nice, you will also have less bites after your 4th of July barbecue. And if you do get bit, you can always apply some lavender oil to the bite because he has great anti-inflammatory qualities.
Sleep is probably the biggest attribute associated with lavender. Because of its amazing smell, it calms and relaxes people who may have trouble sleeping. For me, it simulates a trip to spa and relaxes me so that I am ready to drift off to sleep.
Lavender has so many more qualities to such as helping with skin problems like acne or eczema, blood circulation, hair care, and skincare. I am sure I missed so many other positive things about lavender but for how quality of an oil it is for an affordable price, you can’t go wrong!
# 2 Lemon Oil
Another amazing scent that completely signifies CLEAN is lemon. Lemon is big in the cleaning product department because of its smell, and it is a really good stain remover. Again, you don’t have to use very much because of the oil’s concentration. If you make your own cleaning products, lemon oil is great to have on hand because of its stain-removal and disinfectant qualities.
On the disinfectant note, if you have a wooden cutting board that needs cleaning, look no further! It will kill all the bacteria that can be growing in the grains of your board (I also add a little salt to really help “clean the wound”).
Lemon is a very tasty fruit and so is the oil. Lemon is great at quenching your thirst and when drinking lemon water or tea, it helps curb your hunger and reliever digestive pains. Make sure to only add a drop at a time to your water or tea because it will make you pucker in a hurry!
The best part about a lemon’s oils is how concentrated its nutrients are. Instead of getting the oil from the actual fruit, the manufacturers will cold press the lemon’s peel. So you get more of a lemon’s nutrients if you use the oil versus the actual fruit.
Mmmmmm peppermint. Whether it’s candy, gum, or Christmas, peppermint excites your senses and memories. It is very versatile like lavender and that is why it is a must have in your home.
It helps a lot with bad breath which is probably why mints, gum and mouthwash are flavored by peppermint.
Another item you might smell peppermint in is a muscle relaxing cream. It helps with pains and aches in your muscles. You can use a few drops to rub on the back of your neck or calves; it does wonders! It also is a great oil for relieving tension headaches.
Like lavender, the list goes on and on for peppermint oil uses. I have used it to help clear my sinuses during a cold or allergy season. Peppermint is also great paired with lavender as a bug repellent and has anti-itch properties. Another summer use for peppermint is combining it with some coconut oil or plain aloe vera juice and applying it to your sunburn. The list goes one but it is another oil you need in your home!
#4 Tea Tree
Melaleuca oil is another name for Tea Tree oil, but whatever you call it, it is amazing!
I keep this oil in my kitchen because it is a lifesaver when you burn yourself on the oven or stove. I add it to some coconut oil (1:1 ratio) and put it on the affected area. It hurts at first but the pain almost immediately subside after you put some on your skin. To be more prepared, make some up in a small container that you can keep on your kitchen counter.
Tea Tree oil is great for you hair because it can help with dry scalp and oily hair (like mine). You can add it to your shampoo or make your own shampoo using tea tree oil and lemon oil as your scents.
There is also a handful of cleaning uses for tea tree oil including being used in cleaners and killing mold.
Thieves has an odd smell and is a powerful oil blend (contains rosemary, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus and lemon).
It is a big one on the immunity health oil list. My dad swears by it and won’t drink any water without a few drops of thieves oil. Diffusing it in the air by putting some drops in your humidifier or a diffuser will help your family immensely fight off a cold, and sometimes will keep you from even getting sick.
Because of this oil’s antibacterial element, thieves will help eliminate odors. You can mix several drops with baking soda and let the mixture sit overnight. Then, sprinkle it all over your carpet and then vacuum it up. Fresh smelling carpets, finally! A lot of people have also has success in eliminating foot odor by putting it in their shoes before going to work. I really should try that one.
#6 Purification or Purify Blend
This is one of my favorite oil blends (lemongrass, tea tree, rosemary, lavender, citronella and myrtle). Because purification is such an amazing blend of oils, it has great multipurpose value as an oil.
This is my absolute favorite oil for helping to heal bug bites. It reduces the swelling very quickly as long as you constantly apply it.
It has a powerful and amazing smell, and because of that it helps immensely with getting rid of smoke smells in your house and other foul odors. Why this actually works is because purification actually cleans the air versus hiding the smell like other air fresheners do. You can also put some on a cotton ball to put in the vents of your car, in a musty closet or in your shoes.
